Halacha Corner – 12/19/19

This week in Hilchos Shabbos shiur we learned about the machlokes haposkim as to whether ketchup is considered a dvar lach or yavesh in regards to reheating on Shabbos.  Reb Moshe says it’s a d’var lach but still allows one to put ketchup on a hot potato or piece of meat because he maintains that bishul after bishul is a chumra and treating a solid hot substance as a kli rishon is also a chumra, and we don’t have to be machmir twice therefore one may place ketchup on a hot piece of shnitzel.

In the Hilchos Shabbos Shiur this week we started the sugya of bishul achar bishul. The halacha says the for a liquid mixture once fully cooled down it is assur to reheat. There is a major machkokes about what defines a dry food or a liquid, the consensus of most poskim is that a piece of meet that is in a pan with sauce, should be removed, then let the liquid drip of the meat back  into the pan, after that even though there is still moisture on the meat to the point where if you touch it, your hand would also feel wet the halacha nevertheless is that the piece of meat is considered a dry mixture and may be reheated on Shabbos.

The Hilchos Shabbos shiur at the kollel is learning th sugyos of Bishul, We learnt about the Halacha of Bishul Bechama cooking with the sun. The Gemara teaches that it is perfectly permissible to cook with the sun, because it is not the derech of Bishul. There is a fascinating machlokes between Reb Moshe and Reb Shlomo Zalman if nowadays that people use microwaves is that considered similar to Bishul of Aish which would be assur min hatora or is it not the normal way to cook and therefore although it would be assur miderabanan on a Torah level it would still be Mutar. The reason being that because it is not the derech of cooking eventhough one could technically cook it is still not the normal way. Reb Shlomo Zalman holds that it is only assur derbanan, where as Reb Moshe says it is Assur min Hatorah. This Machlokes has other ramifications as well in terms of meals that come with the package that can self heat, according to Reb Moshe one could argue that this would be assur min Hatora to cook with the chemical reaction heat, however others maintain that even according to Reb Moshe it is not the derech to cook with the self heat pack and Reb Moshe was only discusssing a microwave which became the derech.

Halacha Corner – 11/15/19

In the Hilchos Shabbos shiur we learned a very fascinating halacha.  There are many halachos that are relevant about the knas (penalty) imposed if a melacha was done for a yisroel by a non jew. We are all familiar with the din that if a non jew performs a melacha on shabbos you cannot benefit from that melacha that was done.  However, typically when motzei shabbos comes and the amount of time that it takes to do the melacha passes, it is then permitted to benefit. However, Reb Elyashiv maintains that a picture that was taken on shabbos, for example, at a family simcha if a goy took a picture, and then e mailed it to you after shabbos, because that picture is intrinsically a shabbos benefit, it would not help to wait until after shabbos.  Rather, this photograph is in fact assur forever.
